Welcome to Robert Grogan Fine Art

Autumn Splendor, available from WesternVisions.org

La Motte Lavender

Idaho artist Robert Grogan paints in an impressionistic style that crosses the line into realism. His subjects are portrayed by the use of tightly controlled values, resulting in exquisite color harmony, and the details are added in such a subtle manner the viewer is surprised that they are often mere suggestions. Robert prefers painting on location--"en plein air", choosing landscapes as his primary subject matter. Often he uses the information captured in a small field sketch to expand his studio work. The challenge in his work is to allow the viewer to feel what it was like to be at that place, at that moment, surrounded by the beauty inherent in nature.

Though basically self-taught, Robert has studied with some of America`s most respected landscape artists. He pursues painting with a constant dedication to study and improvement. He strongly believes that studying great paintings in books, museums, and galleries has been, and continues to be, essential to his art education. A popular plein air instructor, Robert teaches week-long workshops in Idaho and South Africa each year.

The two works on this page are recent paintings. Autumn Splendor is Robert's piece featured in the National Museum of Wildlife Art's 2010 fall show, Miniatures and More. La Motte Lavender is a commissioned piece for a collector in South Africa, painted in Franschhoek, South Africa.
